What is LED Light Therapy?

LED is an abbreviation for Light Emitting Diodes. LED’s are tiny light bulbs that emit non-thermal specific wavelengths of light from the visible spectrum. LED Light Therapy is a non-invasive method of light therapy that stimulates the skins natural repair and rejuvenation processes making it safe for all skin types and effective in the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions.

We use the state-of-the-art machine for all our Light Therapy treatments.

How does LED Light Therapy work?

The skin has the ability to absorb light and use it as a source of energy to stimulate a healing response. LED therapy uses specific colour wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at varying depths. The light energises cells to produce collagen, improve elasticity and increase blood circulation and oxygen flow while releasing toxins. This in turn stimulates the anti-ageing process, helps to normalise cellular imbalances, and improves skin tone and clarity. It is a natural biochemical reaction similar to that of plant photo-synthesis which triggers the body to convert light energy to cell energy. LED Light therapy is recognised medically and is a clinically proven treatment. Laboratory studies have shown that when skin is exposed to LED Light wavelengths, skin cells regenerate themselves on average 150% to 200% faster and hydration can be increased by up to 600%.

Treatable Conditions – Amazing results!

LED Light therapy is effective for skin rejuvenation, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne and problem skin, sensitive and inflammatory conditions such as rosacea, eczema and psoriasis and post treatment healing and scars. With LED therapy there are some immediate visible changes in the skin, but most changes occur naturally over a few weeks. The light stimulates natural processes even after the treatment has stopped. LED is a progressive rather than an aggressive approach and builds resistance over time to ageing and external factors.

How many treatments are required?

An LED light treatment simply involves exposing the client’s skin to the beneficial light for 20 to 30 minutes. The number of treatments required can vary with skin type and condition. A single session is an ideal ‘pick me up’ however, a course of treatment is recommended for longer term results. As LED Light Therapy will not damage the skin there is no limit to the amount of treatments that can be taken and is an ideal all year round treatment.

How safe is the treatment?

LED therapy is a gentle, heat free treatment that does not contain harmful ultraviolet wavelengths and therefore cannot damage skin tissue. It is clinically proven to be safe for all skin types, colours and conditions and there is no downtime or risk of unwanted side effects.

Now there is effective acne treatment without costly acne medications. Discover the benefits of blue light for acne…

‘Blue light treatment is a major breakthrough and could be an excellent alternative for those patients who have had minimal success with traditional therapies…*” — Dr. Arielle N.B. Kauvar

What is Blue Light Acne Treatment?

Blue light acne treatment uses blue light (405 nm-485 nm) to kill acne bacteria on and under the skin instead of topical or oral medications. Throughout the treatment, the skin is exposed to a blue light source for a short period of time ranging from 15 minutes to 30 minutes..

Benefits of Blue Light for Acne Treatment

  • 100% natural and non-invasive
  • drug-free with no adverse side effects short or long term
  • safe for all ages and safe for daily use
  • painless
  • no down-time
  • does not stop working over time
  • may work on even antibiotic resistant strains of acne causing bacteria

How Does Blue Light Acne Treatment Work?

Blue light kills acne bacteria. How? When blue light strikes acne bacteria cells it sets off a chemical reaction that causes the bacteria to self-destruct. No harm is done to any other cells on or in the skin. Here is a more scientific explanation from the AAD:

“[Blue] Light gets at the core of what causes acne eruptions: P. acnes, the bacterial responsible for causing acne inflammation, pumps out tiny molecules called porphyrins. When those porphyrin are exposed to certain wavelengths of light, they produce free radicals that kill the bacteria. Without P. acnes around to cause inflammation, acne clears up.” American Academy of Dermatology 2002

Research Leading to FDA Approval of Blue Light For Acne Treatment

Almost every blue light for acne on the market today bases its marketing on this study, done at the Imperial College of London, and published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2000. Here are the highlights:

• 107 patients with mild-moderate inflammatory acne (acne vulgaris) participated in the trial.
• The blue light peaked at 415nm, the red light peaked at 660nm • Patients used the lights in- • There was a 76% drop in visible acne over 12 weeks
Combination Red and Blue light therapy was ‘significantly superior’ to blue light alone or benzoyl peroxide.
• Blue & Red light improve acne by combining anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory action.
• Red & Blue light phototherapy is a safe and effective treatment for acne vulgaris.

Based on this research and similar studies (detailed below), the first blue light acne treatment “system”, ClearLight, gained FDA approval in 2002.

Since then, many smaller studies have been done all over the world, all confirming the effectiveness and safety of blue and blue & red light acne treatment. .

Blue light is one of the best acne treatments available today, but the combination of blue and red light is even better.

Red Light For Acne Treatment

Blue light is an effective acne treatment with a long list of benefits. However, red light therapy it has its own very powerful benefits, and research has proven that the combination of red and blue light is even more effective for acne treatment than blue light alone.

“We found a final mean improvement of 76% in inflammatory lesions using a combined blue±red light radiation which was significantly superior to those achieved by blue light or benzoyl peroxide.”

July 2000 – British Journal of Dermatology

Red Light Speeds Acne Clearing and Helps Prevent New Scars

Visible red light (630nm-700nm) therapy is an effective, scientifically and clinically proven acne treatment that speeds the skin’s natural healing process and efficiently prevents scarring. David Olszewski, EE, IE, and co-author of Light Years Ahead: The Illustrated Guide to Full Spectrum and Colored Light in Mindbody Healing discovered that there is a 200 percent increase in the speed at which skin heals when it is exposed to visible red light.

In fact, in 1903, Niels Finsen won the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his use of red light in small pox treatment for the acceleration of healing and the prevention of scarring. Finsen also used the same red light techniques to treat lupus patients, successfully aiding in the treatment of this often disfiguring disease.

Benefits of Combination Red and Blue Light for Acne Treatment

  • 100% natural and non-invasive
  • drug-free with no adverse side effects short or long term
  • safe for all ages and safe for daily use
  • painless
  • does not stop working over time
  • may be effective against antibiotic resistant strains of acne causing bacteria.
  • decreases inflammation (redness and swelling)
  • speeds skin healing
  • reduces acne clearing time
  • facilitates healing without scarring
  • helps heal pre-existing acne scars over time

How Does Red Light Work in Acne Treatment?

When different wavelengths (colours) of light shine on the skin, they are absorbed into the skin, setting off natural processes within the body. This is called often called photo-bio stimulation. Different results are achieved depending on the colour of the light. Visible red light, for example, (620nm-700nm) is known to increase blood flow and oxygen flow, accelerate the skin’s natural healing processes, and reduce pain.
Visible red LED light is capable of penetrating the skin to a depth of about 8 to 10 mm. Once absorbed, the light provides adequate energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. This makes visible red light therapy an ideal acne treatment, as it decreases inflammation, speeds acne clearing, and reduces scarring – exactly what acne sufferers are looking for.

As you can see, combination blue and red light therapy is simply the best acne treatment available today.

Research Supporting Red and Blue Light Acne Treatment

Red light phototherapy alone is effective for acne vulgaris: randomized, single-blinded clinical trial.

“The precent improvement in non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesion counts of the treated side was significant compared to the control side. VAS decreased from 3.9 to 1.9 on the treatment side and the difference between the treatment and control sides was significant at Week 8.*”

Phototherapy with blue (415 nm) and red (660 nm) light in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

2000 May; 142(5):973-8.

“Assessments were performed every 4 weeks. After 12 weeks of active treatment a mean improvement of 76% (95% confidence interval 66-87) in inflammatory lesions was achieved by the combined blue-red light phototherapy; this was significantly superior to that achieved by blue light (at weeks 4 and 8 but not week 12)*”

Combination blue (415 nm) and red (633 nm) LED phototherapy in the treatment of mild to severe acne vulgaris.

PubMed.gov – 2006 Jun; 8(2):71-5.
Combination blue and red LED therapy appears to have excellent potential in the treatment of mild to severe acne. Treatment appears to be both pain- and side effect-free.
