My natural hair is very wavy, not wavy in a just-come-back-from-a-windswept-beach kind of way, oh no, it’s more of a just-been-dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards look. For that reason I tend to straighten it every time I dry it, but I don’t use straightening irons as they damage my hair too much. Instead I use smoothing serums and straightening styling products and a big flat paddle brush.
That gets out most of the kinks. However, sometimes I feel daring and want to vamp up the waves; enhance them to the point I get a curly mop of hair, rather than a flatter, straighter style. And for that I need gel-like product. If you’ve ever tried using traditional gels you may have found, as I did, that they’re too shiny, sticky and heavy. That’s why I bought Redken’s Wool Shake as an alternative, a brand that rarely fails to deliver with its styling range.
The gel-slush formula their words, not mine adds ‘extreme volume, texture and a high-fashion semi-matte topcoat’ and comes in an easy to use spray. Just shake before use to liquefy the formula, and spray on dry hair wherever you need extra control. It really is easy, it sprays just the right amount to target areas that need a boost and can be used again if you wait 30 seconds between applications – if you want more texture and hold. For best effects scrunch hair as you spray, and separate and add height by using your fingers to tszuj and define particular areas. The gel dries to a moderately firm feel depending on how much you’ve used, of course but it’s not stiff like gel and still looks fairly natural.
Be warned that you will lose all the effects if you comb your hair out at this point. So instead, I’d tweak with your fingers until your hair is just right then set it with a light coating of hairspray. Finally the price – some might find it a little expensive, but it works, I promise! You can dump your curl defining creams and gels and just use this, it’s that good. Sixty nine customers gave it the full five stars on the Redken website. It works particularly well on long hair, which is unusual for gel-like formulas which tend to be too heavy, and it smells divine! It is admittedly quite strongly fragranced, but I love it, so that doesn’t bother me. If you don’t like hair powders, this really is the next best hair product on the market.
